Panova Pulls Out of French Open
PARIS (AP) _ Tatiana Panova of Russia joined the growing list of French Open withdrawals Saturday, telling organizers only that she is sick.
Panova, ranked 35th in the world, was drawn to face Stephanie Foretz of France in the first round at Roland Garros. She’ll be replaced by someone who lost in qualifying.
Panova reached the third round at each of the past four Grand Slam tournaments, including last year’s French Open. Her overall match record in 2003 is 7-12, with opening losses at the last three tournaments.
She did beat Jennifer Capriati on hard courts en route to making the semifinals at Sydney in January.
Other players who earlier said they wouldn’t play at Roland Garros this year include Pete Sampras, Marat Safin, Tommy Haas, Richard Krajicek and Anna Kournikova.
The clay-court Grand Slam tournament starts Monday.
