State police: Man armed with knife fatally shot by trooper

September 26, 2018

STANFORD, N.Y. (AP) — State police say a man armed with a knife was fatally shot by a trooper after he threatened police outside a Hudson Valley bar.

Police say Wednesday two troopers responded around 11 a.m. Tuesday to a report of an intoxicated man menacing a woman at the Coyote Flaco Restaurant in the Dutchess County town of Stanford, 55 miles (88 kilometers) south of Albany.

When the troopers arrived they found 41-year-old Jaime Lopez, of Stanfordville, standing by the driver’s door of a vehicle occupied by a woman. Police say Lopez failed to follow orders from the troopers and then made an aggressive movement toward the officers.

Police say Trooper Kevin Wolensky then fired two shots, striking Lopez.

He was taken to a Poughkeepsie hospital, where he later died. The woman wasn’t uninjured.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing.
