European Community Opens China Delegation
BEIJING (AP) _ The 12-nation Commission of European Communities formally opened a permanent delegation to China, the organization’s external relations commissioner said Wednesday.
The delegation, headed by Ambassador Pierre Duchateau, will promote economic cooperation and trade between China and the EC as well as coordinate efforts between its 12 member nations, Willy De Clercq told a news conference.
The commission is the central body of the European Economic Community, which is China’s top supplier of high technology and third largest trading partner after Hong Kong and Japan. Trade between China and the community totaled $12.44 billion in 1987, De Clercq said.
