May 9, 2019

A grim contributing cause

More than 360,000 American deaths in 2013 included high blood pressure as a primary or contributing cause. That is almost 1,000 deaths each day.

Health hazards increase

High blood pressure increases a person’s risk for heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease.

Sacrifice the salt

Reducing the average amount of salt or sodium that people eat from 3,400 milligrams to 2,300 milligrams per day might reduce cases of high blood pressure by 11 million and save $18 billion in health care dollars every year.

Many use medication

About 7 in 10 U.S. adults with high blood pressure use medications to treat the condition.

Still surprises some

Despite increased awareness, 1 in 5 U.S. adults with high blood pressure don’t know they suffer from the malady.
