Animal Rights Activists Say First Lady Should Shun Mink

January 18, 1985

WASHINGTON (AP) _ A coalition of animal rights groups called on first lady Nancy Reagan Thursday not to wear a white mink jacket designed to go with one of her gowns at Monday night’s inaugural balls.

The Committee for Awareness About Furs delivered a letter to the White House asking Mrs. Reagan to cancel any plans to wear mink to inaugural activities, said group spokeswoman Susan Rich.

The group was ″calling on the first lady to set a humane example for the millions of Americans who look to her lead,″ said Ms. Rich. People must ″remember the millions of animals killed so human beings may wear items that none of us can claim to need,″ she said.

Designer James Galanos designed two cover-ups for Mrs. Reagan to wear with a beaded dress to the inaugural balls. One is a white mink blouson and the other is a white wool evening coat.
