Congress death ruled homicide
A Fort Wayne man’s death on the city’s southeast side Sunday night was no accident; it was homicide, the Allen County coroner ruled Monday.
Drake Amir Wells, 21, was pronounced dead outside a home in the 3400 block of Congress Avenue.
His death didn’t initiate the police response to the residential street between Hessen Cassel Road and Wayne Trace, however.
Police instead responded to the 3500 block of Congress Avenue about 9:40 p.m. on reports another man was shot multiple times.
Authorities found that man inside a house suffering critical gunshot injuries, police spokesman Jason Anthony said at the scene. The man was taken to a hospital.
Based on witness reports, police requested a K-9 unit to search for someone dressed in all black last seen running south between houses, Anthony said.
That’s how police found Wells lying outside a nearby home, Anthony said.
Wells died from a gunshot wound, the coroner said. There have been 36 homicides this year in Allen County.
Police tape blocked multiple houses from bystanders as authorities investigated Sunday night. Despite the late hour, numerous people remained outside as police worked.
The case remains under investigation.
