Shopko in Pine Ridge Mall to close its doors
CHUBBUCK — The Shopko store in Pine Ridge Mall will be closing on May 5, company officials announced Wednesday morning.
The Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin-based retailer, founded in 1962, announced plans in January to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Company officials initially said they would have to close 105 U.S. stores.
Though the Pine Ridge Mall location was not on the original list of closures, the company included the Southeast Idaho store in a news release it issued Wednesday announcing the closing of an additional 139 Shopko and Shopko Hometown stores.
The Idaho Shopko stores planned for closure and the dates when they are expected to go out of business are: Chubbuck on May 5, Twin Falls on May 12, Nampa on April 14, the Boise store at 8105 W. Fairview Ave. on March 17, the Boise store at 2655 Broadway Ave. on April 7, Nampa on April 14 and Bonners Ferry on May 12.
Notably, the Idaho Falls Shopko location did not appear on the list. Shopko, which operates pharmacies in its Pocatello and Idaho Falls stores, has also announced plans to exit the pharmacy business.
“Through our conversations with the potential buyers, it has become clear that it is in our best interest to operate with a significantly smaller store footprint,” store officials said in their Wednesday press release.
Shopko said in the press release that 50 optical centers in closing stores will be moved to freestanding locations.
“We remain hopeful that we will be able to emerge as a stronger company, and we believe that this is the best course of action to make ourselves more attractive to potential buyers and successfully emerge from Chapter 11,” the company said in the press release.
