ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The music of a prolific Indian artist debuts in Western musical notation with the help of University of Michigan, an Ann Arbor high school orchestra and a Fulbright scholar from the South Asian nation.

Tagore on Soul and Strings , scheduled for Tuesday at Washtenaw Community College’s Towsley Auditorium, will feature music by the late Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath Tagore. Performing will be the Pioneer High School Orchestra and Choir with an Indian musician and singers.

The concert includes three songs translated from Indian notation for the first time. The ensemble includes Rajeeb Chakraborty, who plays a stringed instrument called the sarod (sa-ROHD’) and was a Fulbright at the university.

The concert is part of an effort to transcribe the music of Tagore and bring it to the Western world.
