Playoffs are set...Rose Bowl for Buckeyes...Griffin back at quarterback
UNDATED (AP) — College football’s playoffs are set, with top-ranked Alabama facing Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl in a matchup of quarterbacks who are front-runners for the Heisman Trophy -- Kyler Murray of Oklahoma and the Tide’s Tua Tagovailoa. The Alabama quarterback sprained his ankle in Saturday’s Southeastern Conference championship game and is expected to miss at least two weeks. Number-two Clemson faces third-ranked Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl on the same day. The winners meet in the championship game January 7th.
UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State’s consolation prize for missing out on the College Football Playoff is a classic matchup in the Granddaddy of Them All. The Big Ten champion Buckeyes will face Pac-12 champion Washington in the 105th edition of the Rose Bowl. Ohio State finished sixth in the race for four playoff spots after winning the Big Ten title for the third time in five years, trouncing Northwestern 45-24 on Saturday night.
UNDATED (AP) — Georgia was oh-so-close to knocking off top-ranked Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game and earning a spot in the College Football Playoff. Instead, the Bulldogs will settle for an intriguing matchup against Texas in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day in New Orleans. It’s the first time the two powerhouse programs have played since the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2, 1984.
DETROIT (AP) — Los Angeles Rams receiver Brandin Cooks is the first player in NFL history with 1,000 yards receiving in three straight years with three different franchises. Cooks reached the 1,000-yard mark with the Rams in the second quarter against the Detroit Lions. He surpassed the milestone last year with New England and in 2016 in New Orleans. Cooks also had a 1,000-yard season with the Saints in 2015.
ATLANTA (AP) — Robert Griffin III has taken over at quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. The former Washington star came into the game against the Atlanta Falcons midway through the third quarter after Lamar Jackson sustained a possible concussion. This is only the second appearance of the season — and the last two years — for Griffin.
