BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman tells The Associated Press the league is complying with a judge’s order by entering mediation with former players in a bid to settle a concussion lawsuit. Bettman downplayed the significance of the talks, saying the NHL is following the judge’s request. More than 100 former players are part of the lawsuit accusing the NHL of failing to prevent head trauma and for not warning players.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Steve Yzerman (EYE’-zur-muhn) is stepping down as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning after building them into a perennial contender. He is handing the reins to longtime assistant Julien BriseBois. The 53-year-old Yzerman moves to a senior adviser role working under BriseBois for next season. Yzerman’s move comes days before the Lightning open training camp following a trip to the Eastern Conference final.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Panthers victory over the Cowboys was costly. Olsen re-fractured the right foot that kept him out of nine games last season in Sunday’s 16-8 win over Dallas. Williams suffered a knee injury and will need surgery.

Dane County Circuit Judge Jill Karofsky on Tuesday rejected a motion from his attorneys to dismiss one of the counts alleging that the women weren’t as impaired as investigators say. Prosecutors charged Cephus in August with second- and third-degree sexual assault, which are both felonies.
