NEW YORK (AP) _ Scott Sullivan was the Cincinnati Reds player who made news Friday.

A day after Cincinnati acquired Ken Griffey Jr., Sullivan won his salary arbitration case against Cincinnati when an arbitration panel chose his request for a $1.1 million salary instead of the team’s $775,000 offer.

Sullivan, a 28-year-old right-hander, was 5-4 with three saves and a 3.01 ERA in 79 relief appearances last season and made $300,000.

Steve Parris, another Reds right-hander, lost his case Thursday and will get $1.4 million instead of his request for $1,825,000.

Reds outfielders Alex Ochoa and Dmitri Young remain scheduled for hearings next week.

Detroit left-hander C.J. Nitkowski also won Friday and will get a raise from $300,000 to $950,000. The Tigers had offered $600,000. Nitkowski, 26, was 4-5 with a 4.30 ERA and seven saves last season.

Players have a 4-2 lead in arbitration with 15 cases scheduled for the final week.

Sullivan’s case was decided by arbitrators Elisabeth Neumeier, Jeffrey Tener and James Gross. Nitkowski’s case was determined by William Holley, Stephen Goldberg and Tener.

Boston reliever Rich Garces avoided a scheduled Friday hearing by agreeing to a $610,000, one-year contract. Garces, a 28-year-old right-hander, made $300,000 last year, when he had a 5-1 record with a 1.55 ERA. He had asked for $800,000, and the team had offered $525,000.

Also, Tampa Bay voided its minor league contract with 36-year-old infielder Mariano Duncan.

Duncan, who hasn’t played in the majors since 1997, signed with the Devil Rays on Jan. 31 and was to begin next season with the club’s minor league affiliate in Mexico City. He is now free to negotiate with any major league organization.

``The Devil Rays came to terms with a gentleman who was recognized by the major league office to be Mariano’s representative,″ Tom Foley, Tampa Bay’s director of minor league operations, said. ``After talking to Mariano, however, he informed us that he had changed representatives and that our contract with him was not to his satisfaction. We respected Mariano’s wishes and voided the contract.″
