Arrest for shoplifting handbags at Saks

October 5, 2018

GREENWICH — A New Jersey woman has been arrested and charged with stealing handbags on Greenwich Avenue — and almost hitting a police officer in a getaway car — in late 2016, according to police.

Rosetta Armstead, 30, of 53rd Street, North Bergen, was extradited late this week from New Jersey and charged with larceny, resisting arrest and reckless endangerment.

According to the arrest report, Armstead and an accomplice stole handbags from Saks on Greenwich Avenue in October of 2016, then took off in a white Lexus with New Jersey plates. An officer who was on foot patrol tried to stop the car on Greenwich Avenue and Elm Street, and the “vehicle almost hit him,” according to the police statement.

Subsequent investigation lead police to identify Armstead as a suspect, and an arrest warrant was issued. She was arrested in New Jersey on another criminal matter, and Greenwich police picked her up this week to be extradited on the Connecticut charges. She was also cited for criminal mischief, disobeying a police signal and failure to obey a stop sign.

Bail was set at $75,000.
