Smoke rises from a series of small fires sparked by a passing train near Diagonal Highway in Boulder County.

Local fire agencies responded to fires sparked by a passing train in the area of Diagonal Highway and Niwot Road around 12:30 p.m. Monday.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train passing through the area ignited a few “spot fires,” according to Boulder County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Nick Goldberger.

The sparks mainly caught on nearby grasses between N. 63rd Street and Niwot Road along the Longmont-bound side of Diagonal Highway, Goldberger said, and no buildings were threatened.
