Man smashes bottle over 15-year-old girl’s head in Cleveland’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An unidentified man punched a 15-year-old girl and smashed a bottle over her head Sunday in Cleveland’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, police said.

The girl suffered a cut above her left eye and likely lost consciousness in the attack that happened just after 9 p.m. on Detroit Avenue near West 69th Street, according to police reports.

The girl was arguing with the man because he twice propositioned her friend, police reports say.

The friend was walking on Detroit Avenue when the man approached her and asked “What’s good, chocolate?” The friend told the man that she was a minor, and walked away, police reports say.

The friend called the 15-year-old girl and met her near a McDonald’s. The two were walking to the friend’s house when the man jumped out from a doorway and tried to talk to them, police reports say.

The girl yelled at the man and told him she was also a minor. She argued with the man until he punched her in the face, police reports say.

The punch knocked the 15-year-old girl to the ground. The man then took a beer bottle he was holding and smashed it over her face, police reports say.

The man walked away, but a witness snapped a picture of him on a cellphone, police reports say.

Cleveland EMS took the girl to MetroHealth for treatment.

The 15-year-old girl and her friend each told police that did not know the man and never saw him prior to the assault, police reports say.
