NEW YORK (AP) _ Third-ranked Chris Evert won the most bonus money on the women's tennis circuit in 1987, the Women's International Tennis Association announced Sunday.

Evert's share of the Virginia Slims bonus pool was $186,087. Fourth-ranked Pam Shriver was runner-up with $141,812.

Top-ranked Steffi Graf and No. 2 Martina Navratilova were not eligible for the bonus pool because they did not play enough required tournaments in 1987.

Graf's share would have been $250,000, while Navratilova would have won $170,000. Some of that money was divided among other top players. The rest was returned to the WITA, which will use it for player benefits.

A total of $750,000 was paid to top players who accumulated points in 1987 Virginia Slims events.
