Utah Gambling Crackdown Yields 20 Arrests
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) _ Police raided makeshift casinos set up in 13 businesses and homes where players could gamble on dice, sporting events and card games.
Twenty people were arrested Saturday in raids carried out by about 100 officers from law enforcement agencies across the Salt Lake Valley and the FBI.
The gambling sites were part of a sophisticated interstate gambling network, authorities said.
″We’re dealing with a large, illegal gambling operation engaged in sports betting, a lottery and casino gambling,″ said West Valley Assistant Police Chief Stephen Shreeve.
Police also raided a business in Texas on Saturday, said Salt Lake County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Don Strong.
Other states identified by investigators as believed to have related gambling operations include California, Washington, Idaho, Kansas, Illinois, Massachusetts and Virginia.
Authorities said the investigation began in July 1992 when several women reported their husbands lost entire paychecks to illegal gambling.
