U.S. Beats Slovakia in Hockey
MOSCOW (AP) _ Andrew Hilbert and Richard Omberger each scored a pair of goals Thursday to lead the United States past Slovakia 7-2 in the World Junior Hockey Championships.
The victory gave the United States a 2-0-0 record in the opening round of Group A, to tie for first with the Czech Republic. Those teams meet Friday.
Hilbert opened the scoring at 6:44 in the first period. Slovakia’s Thomas Skvaridlo evened the score about a minute later, but Mark Cavosi soon put the Americans ahead for good at 2-1 and Jonathan di Salvatore scored a third U.S. goal at 15:13.
Hilbert scored again in the second period and Omberger followed for 5-1. Skvadrilo scored again for Slovakia in the third period, but that was answered by a goal from Jeffrey Taffe and Omberger finished with a power-play goal at with less than five minutes remaining.
In Group B, Canada and Finland tied 2-2. Jani Rita and Tony Salmelainen scored for Finland while Canada’s goals came from Jamie Lundmark and Brad Boyes.
The result sets up a tight race for the playoffs in this group, with Russia, Canada and Finland all at 1-0-1.
