SCHOOL GRADES

LANSING, Mich. _ Michigan’s Republican-led Legislature backed letter grades for public schools on Tuesday night, narrowly endorsing a statewide accountability structure that would begin in 2019. The bill will soon go to Gov. Rick Snyder for his expected signature, capping a yearslong GOP effort to shake up a lagging education system by having the state give schools an A, B, C, D or F ranking. By David Eggert. MICHIGAN LEGISLATURE-LAME DUCK

LANSING, Mich. _ Michigan Republicans voted Tuesday to make it a crime for government agencies to require the disclosure of nonprofits’ donors and other information, a move decried by critics as shielding political “dark money” but defended by supporters as protecting people’s right to freedom of association. The GOP-controlled House approved the bill 58-51, largely on party lines. It will go to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder following a procedural step in this final week of a frantic lame-duck session. _ AIR BASE-THREATS: Authorities say a medical emergency caused a driver to slam a car into a security barrier at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

_ SUMMER HAILSTORM-AGRICULTURE: The U.S. Department of Agriculture says a portion of Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula has been designated as a natural disaster area following a summer hailstorm that damaged crops.

_ HAMTRAMCK PARK-FOUNDATION: The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation is awarding more than $800,000 toward a master plan and community engagement process for a 26-acre (10.5-hectare) park in the Detroit area.

_ JUVENILE KILLER-PAROLE: A man who was 16 when he killed a 13-year-old girl in Michigan is getting a new sentence with a chance at parole.

_ NERVOUS SYSTEM DISORDER-MICHIGAN: Michigan has additional confirmed cases this year of a mysterious paralyzing illness called acute flaccid myelitis.
