DeKalb Fire rules Greenbrier Road blaze accidental

November 7, 2018

DeKALB – A fire along Greek Row that put six fire departments and two police departments into action Tuesday evening has been ruled accidental, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department.

DeKalb firefighters were called to 914 Greenbrier Road about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday for a second-floor apartment fire, and with help from the Sycamore, Cortland, Shabbona, Genoa-Kingston and Maple Park departments, the fire was put out in 25 minutes, the release says.

It caused about $15,000 in damage and was contained to the single apartment, and workers with the ownership group, Hunter Properties, were working onsite Wednesday afternoon but declined to comment.

The release says the fire was accidental and began in a bedroom, but that none of the tenants were home at the time of the fire. It adds that firefighters had to return just before 1 a.m. Wednesday to put out a small, hidden fire in the soffit, which resulted from the previous fire.

The DeKalb and Northern Illinois University police departments assisted at the scene, as well.
