VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a Vancouver man charged with shooting his adult son died of natural causes, ending the case against him.

The Columbian reports 71-year-old William Wayne Terry was in custody at the Clark County Jail on an assault charge, and he was taken to a hospital where he died earlier this month.

Police say Terry shot his 50-year-old son during an argument on Memorial Day. Police say they discovered the son with a gunshot wound to his abdomen outside Terry's home in the Vancouver Heights neighborhood.

Police say the two argued over food and money leading up to the shooting.

Terry was scheduled to stand trial this week.
