The fishing is on the slow side in and around Bullhead City

BULLHEAD CITY — Whether the fish are on holiday vacation or the fishermen have been too busy with other activities to pursue them, the news has slowed quite a bit in the Bullhead City area.

“The striper bite has slowed some,” said Rusty Braun, proprietor of Riviera Marina in Bullhead City. “There are some out there but the bite is a tad slow.

“I suppose the fish are waiting for our anglers to try out their new rod and reel and that special stocking-stuffer lure or two.”

Proof that the fish — especially stripers — haven’t left the area completely came from local angler Leroy Morin Jr. Morin, fishing from the shore in the Rotary Park area using anchovies, hooked into a 6.32-pound, 263⁄8-inch striper.

“This is a great size and makes for a super-nice meal,” Braun said.

Braun said that was about the extent of the striper news on the river in the Bullhead City area.

That wasn’t the extent of the fishing news in the river, however.

“Here along the Colorado River below Davis Dam, the trout that are coming from our federal hatchery at Willow Beach are best found along the casino area and the beaches along Community Park,” Braun said. “These are some good holes where the trout seem to hang in, in both of these areas.

“Night crawlers and power bait have been producing OK while some spinners are bringing in limits of five trout.”

At Lake Mohave, no news isn’t good news.

“Above Davis Dam on Lake Mohave, the fish are just not cooperating much,” Braun said. “I am getting some reports of good population of shad this year. This should produce some striper boils and some blow-ups. Watch where the birds are and try to get close enough to cast into that area.”

Other species aren’t cooperating much better, Braun lamented.

“The largemouth and smallmouth bass are being a little on the shy side,” he said. “No word on the bite anywhere.”

Maybe when area anglers have a little time to spend on or along the river, they will find the fishing to be a little better.

“Go catch a fish,” Braun urged. “We will see you in soon.”
