Report: India Scholar Parikh Dies

NEW DELHI, India (AP) _ Ramlal Parikh, a former federal lawmaker and noted education scholar, died Sunday at the age of 72, a domestic news agency reported.

Parikh was hospitalized Saturday night with chest pain, United News of India news agency reported, quoting his family members.

As a student, Parikh was keenly interested in politics and was associated with the leaders of India’s independence movement, including Mohandas Gandhi.

He went on to become secretary of the All India Youth Congress. He headed the Gujarat Vidyapeeth University, which was founded by Gandhi. He also served one term as lawmaker in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament.

He is survived by his wife and four daughters. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced
