Broncos Sign Offensive Lineman
DENVER (AP) _ Mark Schlereth, a key member of Denver’s offensive line, re-signed with the Broncos on Monday after weighing an offer from AFC West rival Seattle.
Terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed.
Despite undergoing surgery 20 times in his nine-year career, including 16 on his knees, Schlereth played a crucial role in Denver’s Super Bowl season, helping to protect veteran quarterback John Elway.
A herniated disc forced Schlereth to miss the final five games of the season, but he returned to left guard for Denver’s run through the playoffs.
His signing figures to bode well for the Broncos as they try to re-sign right guard Brian Habib, who also is being courted by Seattle. Having Habib and Schlereth back on the line also could convince offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman to return for a 13th season.
