Utah Agents Find 10,000 Pot Plants

September 24, 1999

LIBERTY, Utah (AP) _ A hiker stumbled across an estimated 10,000 marijuana plants growing in the mountains in what could be the biggest pot seizure ever in the state.

Police continued searching the rugged mountain area near the North Ogden Divide for more plants following Wednesday’s discovery on land that may be owned by the federal government.

Two men were taken into custody Thursday as possible suspects. No other information about the suspects was released.

Weber County Sheriff’s Capt. Terry Shaw said the hiker was walking along when he saw a man in the distance with a rifle. It was then that he realized what he had found.

Within an hour, agents from the Ogden Metro SWAT Team and the Weber Morgan Narcotics Strike Force moved in. The Drug Enforcement Agency also joined the effort.

Besides the plants, agents found a campsite with an elaborate irrigation system, drying racks and weapons.

``This has got to be one of the biggest drug operation busts we’ve been involved in for an awfully long time,″ Weber County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy A.K. Greenwood said.
