CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Michael Harrison of Virginia Beach, Va., and Amy Kattwinkel of Charlotte took first place in the men's and women's fields in the Charlotte Observer Marathon on Saturday.

Harrison won the men's race in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 48 seconds, with Tim Dunlap of Lancaster, S.C., taking second place and Charlotte's Jamey Yon finishing third.

Kattwinkel took the women's marathon by a three-minute margin. Her time of 2:52:28 fell short of her best. But coming back from knee surgery, she was happy. A U.S. Olympic Trials participant, Kattwinkel, 29, won the 1993 Observer Marathon in 2:39:53.

Fewer big names turned out for the 20th running of the event because race sponsors cut the purse from $25,000 to $11,000.
