MIAMI (AP) _ Pittsburgh scored twice within 57 seconds in the first period and goaltender Tom Barrasso notched his 300th career victory as the Penguins defeated the Florida Panthers 4-1 Sunday.

Barrasso became the first American-born goalie to win 300 games, and is the 14th goalie in NHL history to reach that plateau.

Eddie Olczyk and Martin Straka scored midway through the first period, beating Florida goalie John Vanbiesbrouck, to help the Penguins overcome an early 1-0 deficit.

Florida, which lost its second straight game, did little to pressure Barrasso. Leading 1-0, the Panthers failed to score on a two-minute 5-on-3 advantage. After that, the Penguins took control.

Barrasso, who faced only 23 shots, is now 5-1 lifetime against Florida.

Kevin Hatcher had three assists for the Penguins and Ron Francis two.

Jaromir Jagr scored his fourth goal of the season for Pittsburgh. The Penguins also picked up a goal from Jiri Slegr, his first of the season.

Esa Tikkanen’s slapshot from just inside the blue line at 2:41 of the first period has put Florida in front.

Pittsburgh finished the first period with just four shots, but two of them found the net. Olczyk tied the game at 1-1 at 12:12 when his shot deflected off the back of Florida defenseman Gord Murphy.

Fifty-seven seconds later, Rob Brown slipped a pass across the crease that Straka, a former Panther, banged home from the doorstep, putting Pittsburgh ahead 2-1.

Jagr’s goal at 3:13 of the second period came on just the sixth shot of the game for the Penguins, but it gave them a 3-1 lead.
