Stackhouse To Get College Degree

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ Jerry Stackhouse, the Detroit Pistons guard who left North Carolina in 1995 after his sophomore season, will receive his degree Dec. 18.

``I promised my mother that I would finish my degree when I declared myself eligible for the NBA,″ Stackhouse said Wednesday. ``This is really an exciting time for me and my family, and I’m thankful to the Pistons for helping to make this happen.″

Stackhouse will attend a 2 p.m. ceremony in North Carolina, then play against the Philadelphia 76ers at The Palace of Auburn Hills at 7:30 p.m.

The Pistons will honor Stackhouse at the game, calling it the ``Stackhouse Graduation Party.″ Any fan who attends the game wearing a graduation cap and gown will receive free admission and any fan presenting a valid student ID can gain admission for $10.

``We are really proud of Jerry,″ Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. ``For him to leave school early and be able to complete his degree this soon is really an accomplishment.″

Stackhouse earned his degree in African-American Studies. He took classes in summer school and correspondence courses while playing for the Pistons and the 76ers. He finished his academic load by taking eight hours this summer.
