Victim of Nebraska Star Loses Scholarship

April 19, 1996

NEW YORK (AP) _ The woman assaulted by former Nebraska football star Lawrence Phillips has lost her basketball scholarship because the coach is displeased with her play, The New York Times reported Friday.

The newspaper said Kate McEwen has been told by the university the scholarship will not be renewed for the 1996-97 season.

McEwen was assaulted last September by Phillips, a former boyfriend expected to be a high choice in this weekend’s NFL draft.

Angela Beck, the coach of the Nebraska women’s team, said McEwen will still remain on scholarship, but it will be an academic, not athletic, grant. McEwen, a business administration major, was on the Big Eight academic honor roll a year ago.

Beck said McEwen was told she could compete as a walk-on next season. Also, if the team does not reach its limit of 15 scholarship players, athletic aid could be offered this summer.

McEwen, a junior with two remaining years of eligibility because of a medical redshirt season, planned to play basketball one more season. In 11 games this season, McEwen played a total of 36 minutes, scoring three points and grabbing seven rebounds.

The Times said Beck told McEwen a year ago there was little chance for extensive playing time and offered to help her contact smaller schools with greater opportunities.
