Parents Charged With Baby Murder
HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ The parents of a missing 8-month-old baby who was found dead in a pond were charged with murder Friday.
Joseph and Kristi Melancon reported Emily Rose Melancon missing last week and made impassioned pleas for her return.
The break in the case came following a police interview with the couple during which Kristi Melancon told police the baby died while in her care, Hopkinsville Police Department spokesman Mike Wood said.
He said Joseph Melancon led authorities to the location of the baby’s body. The body was found Friday morning in a pond on Fort Campbell, where he is a soldier, said Capt. Carl Purvis, spokesman for the military post.
The body was taken to Fort Campbell’s Blanchfield Army Community Hospital for an autopsy. Accidental death has not been ruled out, Wood said, but there was sufficient evidence to bring murder charges.
Kristi Melancon, 25, was charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and falsely reporting an incident. Joseph Melancon, 24, was charged with murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and filing a false report.
Attempts to reach the jailed suspects or an attorney representing them for comment were unsuccessful Friday night.
