Investigation underway after elderly Salley couple beaten, tied up in burglary
Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a Wednesday burglary involving an elderly couple in Salley.
Deputies responded around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to the 4000 block of Festival Trail Road in reference to a burglary and met with the 87-year-old homeowner and his 80-year-old wife, according to the report.
The victim said around 9:15 a.m. an unknown black male had knocked on the door and asked to use the phone to call someone because he had run out of gas, the report states.
As the male victim turned to retrieve his phone, the suspect forced his way into the residence, along with a second man who came in behind the suspect, according to the report.
The male victim and his wife claimed they tried to fight the suspects for a few minutes, but were overpowered and tied up on the floor, the report states.
One of the suspects reportedly was armed with some kind of gun, the report states.
After a few minutes on the floor, the victim managed to get himself loose from the cords he was bound with and cut his wife loose, police reported.
The victims managed to get to their truck and drive to a neighbor’s house to call police.
Investigators reported seeing abrasions and swelling on the top of the male victim’s head, which he said were due to the suspects hitting him over the head with some kind of blunt object. The female victim had a swollen black and blue mark on the left side of her face, along with a large swollen area on her ankle, police reported.
The male victim claimed the suspects took his wallet and ransacked their home before fleeing the scene, according to the report.
The incident is still under investigation as police work to identify the two suspects.
