high school roundup Cardinals snap skid

The Greenwich High School boys lacrosse team put the breaks on a two game losing streak with a 14-3 home win over Danbury in an FCIAC matchup on Thursday.

Senior Charlie Graves paced the Cardinals with two goals and two assists. Owen Gwozdz, also a senior, registered two goals and one assist, while senior Jack Feda tallied twice for Greenwich (5-6).

Bryce Metalios had two goals, while Matt Davey added one goal and one assist in the winning effort. Also pacing the Cardinals were Garrett Murphy (one goal, one assist), Lance Large (one goal), Nick Veronis (one goal) and Shiv Vaid (one goal). Up next with Greenwich is a showdown against Danbury on Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.

GREENWICH HIGH GIRLS LACROSSE

The Cardinals evened their record at 6-6 with their second straight win, a 17-4 victory over visiting Stamford on Thursday.

Katie Large recorded a hat trick with one assist to help power Greenwich, which scored 13 first-half goals. Paige Finneran, Grace Fahey, Kate Loughran, Jennifer Kelly and Sasha Trieb each tallied twice for Greenwich. Fahey also assisted on five goals and had six draw controls.

Leah Caputo also registered six draw controls for the victors. Sloane Loveless, Kaileigh Jackson and Hailey Hires each played in goal for Greenwich, which received one goal apiece from Kate Ochoa, Caputo, Gabby Cerza and Carly Andruss.

The Cardinals visit Darien on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

GREENWICH ACADEMY TENNIS

GA made it a perfect 10 Thursday, improving to 10-0 with a 7-0 road win over FAA Greens Farms Academy.

Georgia Ryan remained undefeated at first singles for Greenwich Academy, winning her match against Lane Durkin, 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, Emma Carney notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ryan Boyle of GFA. Third singles saw GA’s Maddie Smith post a 6-4, 6-1 win against Dasha Timasheva.

At fourth singles, Lily Martucci was victorious, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles action, Annabel Thrasher/Karina Toub continued to thrive, winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1. Andrea Jemiolo/Kathryn Gregory were 6-2, 6-2 winners at the No. 2 spot and Kate Miele/Lauren Wakeman took a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 3.

GREENWICH ACADEMY, SACRED HEART GOLF

In a tight match throughout between two neighborhood rivals, Greenwich Academy edged Sacred Heart Greenwich, 3-2, in an FAA matchup held on Wednesday at Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich.

“It was a great match between two competitive teams,” GA coach Patrick Dwyer said. “It came down to the third and fourth matches.”

With the win, Greenwich Academy raised its record to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the FAA. Sacred Heart is 8-2 and 3-2 in the FAA. At the No. 1 spot, Carly Haines of the Tigers posted a 2 and 1 win against Katie Dzialga.

Lianna Amoruso of Sacred Heart won her match against Josephine Genereux at No. 2, 2 and 1. Emmy Sammons (No. 3) was a 1-up winner for the Gators against MaryGrace Farrell.

“Emmy Sammons had a birdie on six, parred seven and then made a par on the eighth hole to win the match for us,” Dwyer said. “For our senior captain to close it out for us was really exciting to see.”

Maryanne Grace of GA won her matchup at the fourth spot by a 2 and 1 decision against Lexi Herrmann. Grace sank a par putt on the eighth hole to win her match. At the fifth position, Sammy Doniger defeated Sacred Heart’s Kate Hong 4 and 3.

Up next for Greenwich Academy is a match against Riverdale Country Day School at Century Country Club in Purchase. Sacred Heart goes up against Loomis Chaffee and Hotchkiss School on May 8.

GREENWICH HIGH GIRLS GOLF

The Greenwich High School girls golf team improved its record to 6-1 by defeating Trumbull at Griffith E. Harris Golf Course on Wednesday.

The Cardinals, who are 4-1 in the FCIAC, received a round of 40 from junior Sydney Nethercott, who earned medalist honors. Sofia Ghorbel shot a 48, while Jackie Intriere carded a 53 for Greenwich. Sarah Peng finished with a 58 for GHS.

Meghan Lesko carded a 51 for Trumbull, which received a round of 53 from Grace Hall.

GREENWICH HIGH GIRLS TENNIS

The Cardinals won their second straight match, topping FCIAC foe Norwalk on the road, 7-0, in a match held on Wednesday.

Martine Fierro was a 6-0, 6-0 winner for Greenwich against Iasiah Sena at first singles. Nathalie Williams of Greenwich won her match at second singles against Angelica Martin, 6-0, 6-0.

Christina Gianesello and Kendall Schrohe were also victorious 6-0, 6-0, at third and fourth singles, respectively. Yui Inagawa/Amy Bickham posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at the top doubles spot. Abby Shropshire/Hannah Viney (No. 2) and Ellie Viney/Courtney Sheets (No. 3) also cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories.

GREENWICH HIGH BOYS TENNIS

Greenwich registered a 5-2 road win against Norwalk in an FCIAC match played on Wednesday. The Cardinals won two singles matches and swept the doubles matchups.

James Cosby was victorious at third singles for GHS, posting a 6-1, 6-0 win. At fourth singles, Alician Beba won his for the Cardinals, 6-2, 6-1. Prem Dave posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Greenwich’s Caleb Fockens at No. 1 singles, while Taishi Hosokawa of Norwalk was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Matthew Tamis.

Nick Liu/Hayden Witmer won in straight sets at first doubles for Greenwich, 6-1, 6-1, while Boris Ardemasov/Derek Wang swept their foes at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. At third doubles, Kian Jain/Jimmy Papas also won.
