49ers Told to Forget About Allen
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ The New Orleans Saints have ended trade talks with the San Francisco 49ers about cornerback Eric Allen, according to a report published in Saturday’s edition of The Times-Picayune.
Saints officials informed the 49ers that they no longer will consider trading Allen to their NFC West rivals, unidentified NFL sources told the newspaper.
That development, coupled with Minnesota’s decision to suspend its pursuit of Allen until Monday, effectively leaves the Saints and Allen at an impasse, although Tennessee and Jacksonville are known to be interested in the former All-Pro.
Allen has threatened to retire unless he is traded to a team of his choosing, preferably the 49ers, the sources said Friday.
Saints general manager Bill Kuharich has refused to comment on the Allen situation, but 49ers director of football operations Dwight Clark acknowledged his club was out of the Allen trade talks.
``Nothing is happening, and I don’t anticipate anything will,″ Clark said.
