NRL playoffs: Canterbury wins in extra time
SYDNEY (AP) — Halfback Trent Hodkinson’s golden point field goal four minutes into extra time gave Canterbury an 18-17 win over Manly, moving the Bulldogs into a National Rugby League preliminary final against Penrith next Saturday.
The scores were level after Hodkinson and his Sea Eagles counterpart Daly Cherry-Evans kicked late field goals before 28,186 fans. Canterbury led 16-6 at halftime on Saturday.
The defending champion Sydney Roosters led 30-0 after 32 minutes but needed a 76th-minute field goal from James Maloney on Friday to beat the North Queensland Cowboys 31-30 and advance to the final four.
The Roosters will play the South Sydney Rabbitohs next Friday in the other preliminary final. The winners of those matches will meet in the grand final at Stadium Australia on Oct. 5.
