Detroit Lions Sign Az-Zahir Hakim

March 7, 2002

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) _ Az-Zahir Hakim, one of the many weapons in the St. Louis Rams’ high-scoring offense the past three seasons, signed with the Detroit Lions on Thursday.

Hakim, has spent his four-year career with the St. Louis Rams, where he played behind Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt and returning punts. But he played regularly, catching 148 passes for 2,032 yards and 16 touchdowns.

His main weakness was a tendency to fumble, particularly on punt returns.

Earlier this week, the Lions signed free agent strong safety Brian Walker, citing the need to increase the speed of their secondary.

Hakim joins a Lions receiving corps which includes Johnny Morton and Germane Crowell.
