Man Charged In Thanksgiving Day Assault Of Mother, Sister, Father

November 26, 2018

A Moosic man faces felony counts on allegations he assaulted his family on Thanksgiving, borough police said.

Andres Rafael Lopez, 28, 102 O’Connor Drive, is accused of choking his mother, beating his sister and cutting his father’s throat bad enough to require surgery.

The incident began shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday after Lopez’s family confronted him about an earlier fire in the basement, according to an affidavit prepared by Officer Jason O’Hora.

His parents, Rafael and Lucia Lopez, began to discuss getting their son help for his mental health and Andres Lopez overheard it.

He grabbed his mother by her throat and choked her until she lost consciousness. She later woke up in a pool of blood — caused by injuries suffered in the beating, police said — and called 911.

After assaulting his mother, Andres Lopez turned on his sister, Karina Lopez, who yelled for help as he pulled her down the stairs and attempted to grab her neck.

Rafael Lopez intervened and the father and son started to fight, police said.

Andres Lopez, who police said competes in martial arts tournaments, won. Karina Lopez ran up the stairs to her sister’s room. When she turned to look back, she saw her father face down in a pool of blood next to her mother.

Andres Lopez fled the home.

Police arrived and found a large cut on Rafael Lopez’s neck, which emergency crews said needed immediate attention. He was taken to the hospital for surgery.

Lucia and Karina Lopez both had facial swelling and Lucia lost a front tooth, police said.

Police arrested Andres Lopez later that night. By 9:45 p.m., he went before a district judge for arraignment on charges of strangulation, aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.

Andres Lopez is in the Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled 11 a.m. Monday.
