Putin Aide: Kursk Bow to Be Raised

November 6, 2001

NEW YORK (AP)_ The Russian navy will raise the mangled front section of the Kursk submarine from the Barents Sea next year, an assistant to Russia’s president said Monday.

The section was left on the seabed in October, when a Dutch consortium lifted the submarine, which sank Aug. 12, 2000, after an explosion that killed the entire 119-man crew.

Sergei Yastrzhembsky, an assistant to President Vladimir Putin, said that the Russian navy would pull up the nose section that had been cut off and left on the sea floor for fear it would destabilize the lifting operation of the remainder of the craft.
