LOS ANGELES (AP) — Last night’s American Music Awards was not just about music, but voter registration. Host Tracee Ellis Ross wore a shirt that said, “I am a voter.” Actor Billy Eichner (EYEK’-ner) was about to present the award for adult contemporary artist when he went on a tirade for more than a minute urging voting. He urged people to “please grab your friend, tell them to vote.” Taylor Swift made a plea for voting as well when she accepted the artist of the year award. She pointed out that all the awards were voted on by the people and added, “You know what else is voted on by the people? The midterm elections on Nov. 6.” Swift’s four awards gave her 23 lifetime AMAs, pushing her past Whitney Houston’s 21 to become the female with the most AMA wins overall.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joe Elliott of Def Leppard says he’s not taking anything for granted after finding out the band is nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elliott tells Billboard magazine he doesn’t feel it will change his life one way or the other, but he adds, “Jon Bon Jovi has been telling me for at least 12 months that yes, it will.” Def Leppard is a first-time nominee, along with Devo, John Prine, Roxy Music, Stevie Nicks, and Todd Rundgren. Other nominees are Janet Jackson, Kraftwerk, LL Cool J, the MC5, Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Roxy Music, Rufus and Chaka Khan, The Cure and The Zombies. Industry insiders will decide the inductees, but fans can exert their influence by voting at RockHall.com. The top five vote-getters will comprise a “fan ballot” which gets tallied with the other ballots. Inductees will be announced in December. The inductions are March 29 in New York.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kanye West has a lunch date at the White House tomorrow. HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (AP) — The National Trust for Historic Preservation says has declared the two-story home in Dix Hills, New York, where John Coltrane composed his “A Love Supreme” album as a national treasure. The home also is where his wife, Alice Coltrane, recorded her first album, “A Monastic Trio.” The Coltranes moved there in 1964, and Alice Coltrane sold it in 1973, five years after her husband’s death. The home changed hands a few times and was slated for destruction in 2002 before the Town of Huntington bought it in 2006. The house needs significant repairs, but it still has the original wood paneling in the living room and the original shag carpeting in Alice’s meditation room.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics have teamed together as producers for an NBC competition show for songwriters. “Songland” will feature five contestants working on songs with professional songwriters and a recording artist. As the songwriters get narrowed down, the winning song will be recorded and released by that artist. The first episode features Charlie Puth as the recording artist, working with Tedder, pop songwriter Ester Dean and country singer-songwriter Shane McAnally (MAK’-ah-nal-ee). No air date for the series was given.
