Couple finds Civil War munitions at North Carolina beach
KURE BEACH, N.C. (AP) — A couple has discovered a 30-pound Civil War artillery shell on a beach in North Carolina.
WWAY-TV reports Kerry and Patti Belanger were walking along Kure Beach looking for seashells and shark teeth. Patti Belanger says she noticed something odd in the sand, so Kerry Belanger dug it up.
The couple took the item home and posted pictures on Facebook for help to figure out what it was. Later, Patti Belanger called police.
State archaeologists determined it was a 30-pound Parrott round. New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jerry Brewer says the round was taken from the Belanger’s home and discharged.
The artifact will be displayed in the Belanger’s name because they found it. State archaeologists told the couple state law prohibits them from keeping it.
