Boxing: Edson Stops Murray
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) _ Charles Murray, the former IBF junior welterweight champion, stopped Rick Edson at 2:01 of the first round Thursday night in a scheduled eight-round welterweight bout.
Murray, of Rochester, N.Y., improved to 41-5, while Edson, of Manchester, N.H., dropped to 12-8. Murray weighed in at 148 pounds, two less than Edson.
In another welterweight bout, Michael Covington of Trenton improved to 17-0 with a unanimous six-round decision over Robert Muhammad of Columbia, S.C. Muhammad dropped to 6-10-1.
In a scheduled six-round light heavyweight contest, former middleweight contender Joe Gatti of Bayonne stopped Kelvin Prather of Ocala, Fla., at 2:57 of the second round. Gatti, fighting for the first time in two years, is 31-3 with 21 knockouts. Prather is 8-13-1.
