Washington Grand Prix Canceled

March 8, 2003

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Washington Grand Prix was canceled Friday by the American Le Mans Series, which blamed the race’s promoter.

The event was scheduled for the final weekend of July.

The event was a ``victim of operational problems on behalf of the race organizer,″ said a statement by ALMS president Scott Atherton.

He did not elaborate, but said ALMS wants to return Washington as soon as possible.

Bobby Goldwater, the chairman of the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission, said the event’s promoter, National Grand Prix Holdings, failed to meet its obligations to the ALMS and the Commission.

Officials from NGPH could not be reached for comment Friday night.

The event was staged last year in the parking lot at RFK Stadium. It was the first auto race in the nation’s capital in more than 80 years.
