Washington council passes ordinances to protect city hall

September 4, 2019

WAPATO, Wash. (AP) — A Washington city council has passed measures to protect its city hall after discovering evidence of tampering with security cameras and public records.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reported Tuesday that the Wapato City Council passed two measures to increase safeguards during a meeting Tuesday.

Officials say cables to the cameras monitoring the back doors of city hall were recently cut.

Officials say the city attorney was also informed that city records may have been removed or destroyed.

The council unanimously passed an ordinance to re-establish cameras at the back of the building and to create policies and procedures to protect public records and city funds.

Another ordinance passed by the council authorized the city attorney to report suspected violations to law enforcement.
