UPDATE: Bridge jumper found alive

November 11, 2018

HUNTINGTON - A man who jumped off the 31st Street Bridge Friday night was found alive Saturday morning, according to Cabell County 911 dispatch.

Emergency officials had called off the search for the man around midnight Saturday due to the darkness.

A call came in around 11 p.m. Friday that a man had jumped off the Frank “Gunner” Gatski Memorial Bridge, also known as the East Huntington Bridge and the 31st Street Bridge.

The man was in the water when crews arrived, and went under the water and hadn’t resurfaced 30 minutes after he jumped. Officials said the river was “moving really fast.”

Cabell County EMS had a boat in the water to aid in the search. The Huntington Fire Department and Huntington Police Department were also on scene, and officials from Ohio were assisting at the scene as well.

The bridge, which connects Huntington to Proctorville, Ohio, was closed temporarily while emergency officials searched the river below for the man but has since reopened.
