Akron to donate downtown-area building to nonprofits

March 12, 2019

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The city of Akron has indicated it is ready to donate a 250,000-square-foot building and two lots near downtown to nonprofit organizations already using them.

The Akron Planning Commission plans to discuss two proposals that would support a community garden run by Let’s Grow Akron and the Bounce Innovation Hub. The Akron Beacon Journal reports both deals have been approved by Mayor Dan Horrigan’s administration.

Final approval of donations rests with the city council after the commission weighs in on Friday.

The first deal would begin the process of handing 526 S. Main Street to Bounce Innovation Group by way of a 10-year forgivable loan.

The city plans to donate the vacant lots near Summit Lake to Let’s Grow Akron, which already uses the land for a community garden.
