Schlomer’s 21-point performance pushes Luther Prep past Lodi

February 3, 2019

LODI — Junior guard Paul Frick made two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to give the visiting Luther Prep boys basketball team a 3-point lead and senior guard Luke Schlomer tallied 21 points as the Phoenix held on to top Lodi 63-60 in a Capitol North Conference game on Friday.

Lodi’s Jack Persike came off a double screen in the final seconds and got off a 3-pointer from the top of the key over two defenders but hit the back iron as the Phoenix survived.

Lodi raced out to a 14-2 lead early in the game before Luther Prep tied it up at halftime.

Schlomer shot 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and hit three 3-pointers after halftime.

“It was huge that Luke was hitting shots and giving us some more open lanes,” Luther Prep head coach Nate Kieselhorst said.

Lodi (7-8, 2-4 in conference) held Luther Prep (9-4, 4-2) senior Micah Kieselhorst to a season-low two points. Kieselhorst turned into a facilitator and the attention the Blue Devils placed on him and Schlomer led to open looks for others.

“With their guy uptight on Micah and on Luke that opened up lanes for others to attack the rim,” coach Kieselhorst said. “Frick and de Galley, two junior guys, did a great job of breaking down people. It was a great team effort all around.”

Junior guard Nate de Galley scored 14 points and Frick added nine.

Senior guard Malachi Roeseler and senior forward Alex Lawrence each scored five points.

Persike totaled 21 points and Max Hamilton scored 18 points for Lodi.

Luther Prep senior forward Zach Gregorius held Lodi center Cole Steinhoff to only four points, five below his season average.

Luther Prep sits at 4-2 in Capitol North play, a game behind Lake Mills and Lakeside Lutheran with four conference games remaining.

The Phoenix travel to face Hustisford in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
