Bill Gates Visits China, Chats With President
BEIJING (AP) _ Microsoft Corp. chairman Bill Gates took time off during a vacation in China for a chat with President Jiang Zemin, Chinese media reported.
Jiang told Gates he appreciated Microsoft’s cooperation with China in software, the national evening news said in a brief report of the Tuesday meeting.
A spokesman at the Seattle-area headquarters of the giant software company confirmed last month that Gates and his wife, Melinda, were planning a September vacation in China.
A Chinese version of Microsoft’s Windows 95, software that runs personal computers, is expected to be released in December. It will use the simplified forms of Chinese characters used in mainland China.
Microsoft’s general manager for China, Duh Jiabin, has said pirated versions of Chinese Windows 95 started appearing in August after the company sent a test batch.
