Private group takes ownership of Peoria-area park
EDWARDS, Ill. (AP) — A nonprofit group has taken over the management of Wildlife Prairie State Park near Peoria.
The (Peoria) Journal Star (http://bit.ly/ZXmqDa ) newspaper reports that Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation at the park over the weekend that removes the word “state” from the name and transferring ownership of the park from the state to the Forest Park Foundation of Peoria. The foundation has already been managing the park with the Friends of Wildlife Prairie Park.
The paper reports that the 2,000-acre park has been operated by the state’s Department of Natural Resources for more than a decade. But state budget problems left the department struggling to provide money to maintain the park, prompting state lawmakers to pass legislation to to transfer ownership to the private group.
