Sam Houston Race Park Cowgirls Like Uslooks to rebound

February 25, 2019

Could this be redemption Saturday for Cowgirls Like Us?

The 3-year-old filly entered her first 2019 race last month as a prospect for May’s Kentucky Oaks. The Oaks is Churchill Downs’ day-before-the-Kentucky Derby main event.

Cowgirls Like Us had little chance in the January race. She stumbled from the Fair Grounds’ starting gate and then had to right herself a second time. The tardy getaway yielded a fourth-place finish.

“After she stumbled twice, she couldn’t get back in the race,” trainer Bret Calhoun said.

Cowgirls Like Us will try to rebound in Sam Houston Race Park’s $65,000 Two Altazano Stakes on Saturday, scheduled for 8:45 p.m. Despite the poor start in her January race, the Calhoun runner is heavily favored in this second 2019 outing. A victory would mean three in a row in the Two Altazano for Calhoun, who won in 2017 with Archer City and last year with Howboutthiscowgirl.

The Two Altazano and the $65,000 Jim’s Orbit, Saturday night’s 3-year-old male equivalent, are filled with Calhoun- and Steve Asmussen-trained entries. They have entered six of the 15 runners in SHRP’s paired features for 3-year-olds bred in Texas.

Although SHRP lists Saturday start times as 7 p.m., the first race will begin at 7:15.
