Lourdes clips Bluejays in shootout, set up potential 3-way tie for conference title

October 6, 2018

OSHKOSH — Junior receiver Caden Chier’s 1-yard touchdown run with 17 seconds remaining and junior kicker Tyler Johnsen’s extra point gave Lourdes Academy a 42-41 Small Trailways victory over previously unbeaten Johnson Creek on Thursday at Titan Stadium.

“Our defense has been solid all year and tonight we just could not stop them,” Johnson Creek football coach Tim Wagner said.

“We joked at half and said whoever had ball last would end up winning.”

Johnson Creek (7-1, 5-1 in conference) took a 41-28 lead with five minutes remaining on junior quarterback Justin Swanson’s 4-yard TD run followed by his two-point conversion pass to senior tight end Lucas Sullivan.

Lourdes (7-1, 5-1) scored with 2:30 remaining on a 7-yard TD run by Johnsen, then forced a three-and-out to get the ball back for one last possession.

Chier scored the final touchdown of the game on a fourth-and-goal play.

“Our defense has been stellar and sound all year,” Wagner said. “Tonight, we couldn’t do it. Our kids played hard. We’re still 7-1. Next Thursday we’re playing for a conference title. This game could have gone either way. They had it last and punched it in with 17 seconds to go. It was a shootout.”

The Bluejays outgained Lourdes 512-469 in a losing cause. Swanson finished 13-of-22 for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Kaleb Hartwig rushed eight times for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Sullivan returned from injury and led the Bluejays in receiving with four catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Lourdes sophomore quarterback Joshua Bauer completed 12 of 22 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown. Senior Trevor Bengson led the Knights in rushing with 17 carries for 73 yards and two scores. Senior receiver Benny Huizenga caught six passes for 119 yards.

Johnson Creek hosts Wayland Academy next Thursday at 7 p.m. to close out the regular season. With a win, the Bluejays are expected to finish in a three-way tie for the conference championship with Lourdes and Fall River, which beat the Knights 15-10 in Week 3 before losing to the Bluejays 14-6 in Week 6.
