Miss. Valley 75, Prairie View 58
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ George Ivory scored 26 points Sunday to lead Mississippi Valley State to a 75-58 victory over upset-minded Prairie View, giving the Delta Devils the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
In winning for the ninth straight time, Valley, 20-10, ended the longshot bid of Prairie View, a winner of only three of 27 games before it scored two tournament upsets. Mississippi Valley will meet top-ranked Duke, 32-2, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Prairie View, 5-25, never led but managed two early ties before a three- point play by Mark Coleman gave the Delta Devils a 7-4 lead. Ivory scored 16 points as Valley built a 34-26 halftime lead.
Valley, which finished third in the SWAC regular season, outscored Prairie View 16-5 in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the second half to break the game open. Ivory and Coleman each had four points in the burst. Coleman finished with 17 for Valley, while Reginald Jones topped Prairie View with 15 and David Holloway added 12.
