Ripley boys soccer holds down Cabell Midland, 5-2

September 20, 2018

BARBOURSVILLE — The goals came in bunches for Ripley while its defense thwarted all comeback attempts by Cabell Midland and the Vikings left Ona with a 5-2 win at the Castle on Tuesday night in boys high school soccer.

Cabell Midland didn’t take advantage of scoring opportunities, and Ripley forced the Knights into a 2-1 deficit at halftime then stretched that lead to 4-1 in the early minutes of the second half.

“We started off too slow and they were able to get the lead,” Cabell Midland goalkeeper and team captain Cameron Grobe said. “It just makes you more tired when you have to try to come from behind and catch up.”

Cabell Midland was playing catchup for most of the game.

Davison Flint set up Broedy Boyce on a goal in the 10th minute for the first score of the game to give the Vikings (6-6-1) the lead. Less than a minute later, Matthew Bowlby scored an unassisted goal for a 2-0 advantage.

Cabell Midland scored its first goal at 29:52 when Jaden Fleshman dribbled across the field and sent a shot past Ripley goalkeeper Nate Williams, who was shielded on the play by his teammates, to make it 2-1.

Ripley scored in the opening seconds of the second half when Flint’s goal made it 3-1. Maximus Greely-Fay scored seconds later to give the Vikings their largest lead of the night at 4-1.

Cabell Midland inched closer with a goal by Simon Anton in the 46th minute on a free kick to get the Knights back to within 4-2, but Ripley’s defense halted the rally there.

At the 62-minute mark, Boyce scored his second goal on a header off a free kick to make it 5-2.

“We didn’t compete as hard,” Cabell Midland midfielder Garrett Shields said. “It was really an unlucky game for us. We missed our chances and they got theirs.”

Shields and Fleshman had free kicks for Cabell Midland in the first half that narrowly missed finding a teammate who could have cut into the Vikings lead earlier or even tied the game for the Knights. Shields’ kick was left just in front of the Ripley goal, but none of his teammates could get off a shot.

In the second half, two more Cabell Midland free kicks just missed their mark.

One Knights shot that did find the goal late in the second half was called back by a handball infraction.

We’ll get them next time,” Shields said.
